Energy meter ET112 | 1 phase - max. 100A
Electricity meter and control input in the ESS system | Current measurement at the output of a PV inverter and an AC genset
The ET112 Victron energy meter is a standard device for measuring the power and energy of a single-phase application, e.g. at the distribution box or in the ESS system. For example, at the distribution box or for measuring the power of a PV inverter, an AC genset or the power of an inverter and inverter/charger. Its data is displayed on a GX device and the VRM portal. It is designed for single-phase for a maximum measured current of 100A.
It can be connected to the GX device with a cable connection via the RS485-to-USB interface or wirelessly via the Zigbee-to-USB and Zigbee-to-RS485 converter.
Energy meters are typically used in an energy storage system to measure the power and energy of the entire application at the distribution box. They can also be used to measure the output of a PV inverter. The energy meter is required to optimise self-consumption or to implement a zero feed-in in an ESS. The data is displayed on a GX device such as the Cerbo GX MK2 and also online in the Victron VRM portal if a Wi-Fi connection is available
The energy meter can be configured for four different functions in a GX device (e.g. Cerbo GX):
-
Can be used as a grid meter and as a control input for an ESS system.
-
For measuring the power of a PV inverter.
-
For measuring the power of an AC generator.
-
As an AC meter for measuring a special AC load circuit.
Wiring for two typical applications for the ET112 energy meter
Grid meter - cabling when used as a grid meter
PV inverters - cabling for measuring PV inverters or alternating current generators
Example configuration for a single ET112 as a grid meter
In this example configuration, a single ET112 is configured as a grid meter and measures the grid import/export of an ESS system with an AC PV inverter
Connection of the ET112 energy meter to a GX device
1. RS485 to USB interface connection with an Cerbo GX
The ET112 can be connected directly to an Cerbo GX using an RS485 to USB interface cable. The interface cable between the GX device and the energy meter can be extended up to 100 metres. This gives you many options for installing the energy meter.
2. zigbee connection of the energy meter with an Cerbo GX
The ET112 energy meter can be connected wirelessly via a Zigbee connection, for example to an Cerbo GX. The ZigBee radio standard is designed for the energy-saving connection of devices over short distances.

Frequently asked questions:
Question 1: Can I combine three ET112 for a three-phase system?
No. Use a real three-phase meter.
Question 2: Can I also use other meters, for example from other brands?
No.
Question 3: I already have a Fronius SmartGrid meter, can I use this?
No.
Question 4: What are the differences between the various 3-phase meters?
- EM540 - REL200100100 - Carlo Gavazzi EM540DINAV23XS1X & EM530DINAV53XS1PFC
- ET112 - REL300100000 - Carlo Gavazzi ET112-DIN.AV01.X.S1.X
- ET340 - REL300300000 - Carlo Gavazzi ET340-DIN.AV23.X.S1.X
Differences:
- The ET counters do not have a display. They only have an LED that flashes in the event of active communication.
- The ET counters have two RJ45 sockets, but these are not used with the Victron RS485-USB interface.
However, please note the possible risk of confusion due to the additional RJ45 socket in the Victron product world. Do not confuse this with VE.Bus, VE.Can or VE.net. In addition to the RJ45 sockets, the meters also have screw terminals below the sockets for the RS485 cabling. We recommend connecting a counter to the RS485 USB interface and then to a GX device. - As there is no display, the Modbus address can no longer be changed on the meter. The combination of several of these meters in an RS485 network is therefore not supported by Victron. We recommend that you use multiple RS485-to-USB interfaces.
Only 3-phase meters:
- The energy measurement of single-phase PV inverters on the second phase of a 3-phase meter actually works.
Question 5: Will you continue to offer both 3-phase meters (ET340 & EM24 / EM540)?
- Yes, there are still suitable situations for both. See question 8.
Question 6: Can I buy these meters directly from Carlo Gavazzi instead of from you?
Yes. This is also the reason why we make no secret of the CG part numbers.
Question 7: I want to use current transformers, is that possible?
Yes. You can buy the CG EM24DINAV53DISX, the CG EM530DINAV53XS1X or the CG EM530DINAV53XS1PFC directly from
Carlo Gavazzi or a dealer. Even though Victron does not offer these types of meters, we support them in our
software.
Question 8: What is the difference between ET340 and EM540 in 3-phase systems?
With these meters, the sum of the imported and exported energy is calculated in a different way.
- With the ET340, the imported and exported energy in each individual phase is counted and then the total is calculated from the sum of these values.
- With the EM540, the imported and exported energy is counted as total power, with the net difference values of the individual phases cancelling each other out.
The selection of the most suitable energy meter depends on the metering configuration in your country. In Austria and Germany, for example, it is common for only the total amount to be billed for a 3-phase system, so using an EM540 for billing is more accurate.
So if you export from one phase and import from another phase after the energy meter but before the billing meter, you will not be billed for this and the meter should not count it as import and export.
This is also how Victron's phase compensation works to maximise the cost savings for an ESS system when generation and load are different across different phases.
Question 9: Can I use an isolated USB-RS485 interface?
Yes. The interfaces we offer are not isolated and are suitable for most applications.
If you need an isolated one, buy it directly from Hjelmslund Electronics.
- USB485-STIXL : Isolated USB to RS485 converter
Question 10: Can I use energy meters from Victron instead of an inverter/charger from Victron to use a GX device (e.g. Cerbo GX), VRM and other functions?
Energy meters are intended as a supplement to an inverter/charger from Victron. Energy meters are currently limited in their application possibilities. The energy meters are only intended to provide certain additional information - the total loads at the AC input and grid import/export or the production of AC PV inverters and AC generators without grid communication.
However, it is quite possible to initially use only a GX device together with an energy meter to determine and record the consumption, for example of houses/buildings, heating systems with heat pumps, ventilation and air conditioning systems or production facilities. The collected data can then be analysed and a decision can be made on the dimensioning of the required Victron inverters/chargers, the solar system and the type, size and number of batteries.
With firmware version 2.80 and higher of the GX devices, they can also be used for other purposes, e.g. to measure specific, arbitrary AC loads or circuits. However, this should not be considered as a replacement for an Victron inverter/charger. If you try to use battery inverters from other manufacturers and replace their missing data connection to the GX device with energy meters, this will not work as expected.

(4) Baud rate = how often the energy meter provides a new value in its registers. Note that the latency time of the GX device (the time it takes to read at 9600 baud) is between 180 and 250 ms.
